I see your eyes and read the history you try so hard to hide in your secret thoughts – the red tears that you deny the existence of shows the hidden feelings you don’t have for me – the words you spell out to my ears never telling the truth behind your heart – I have the thoughts of a broken man walking through your selfish existence – that you live within your own lonely life – why can you never see me as the one that you are destined for in this lifetime.

Jack has just turned the camera on, he returns to his chair and is now in front of the camera, it has the quality of a ‘home movie’.  Behind Jack the camera can pick up a very basic flat, dirty white walls and very limited furniture.

“Hi. 

I think maybe it should be hello.

Hello.  My name is Jack. I’m making this video, here, to showcase my life, and to record a life of brilliance.

Why?  You ask. 

Well; I’m am about to be a superstar, and I don’t want any of you to miss it. 

Not that you will. 

What you are about to see, as you already know, is truly a statement of genius.  Honestly, a genius is what all of you will consider me to be. 

Truly fantastic.

Well, we better get started.  Like I said, my name is Jack and I am going to show you my life. 

I am very special.  I kill people.

Well, what I mean is that I am about to start to kill people. 

Not just anyone.  Very special people are chosen, studied and then executed.  Yes, that sounds better than ‘kill’.

Shocked?  A little nervous?  Don’t be.  I won’t be showing you any of that.  Do you think I’m sick or something?

Now, I have cheated a bit and I have researched my first client.  She is very attractive, young and clever.  Perfect for guaranteeing a big audience.

She lives in a town, not far from here.  Far enough for me no to be known.  At all.  You see it is so important to not only have the correct client, but also to have the right surroundings. 

This shows where I live, here.  These lines show the miles radius that is apparent to where I live.  This one is ten miles, this one twenty, and so on.

Now, let me answer some of you questions first.  No I am not mad, never had a troubled childhood, do not have drink or drug problems.  I don’t even have problems with my frontal lobe!  I am just the same, if not saner than the majority.  And that, my friends is a fact.

Over the next few weeks, even months, I will be sharing my thoughts and adventures with you as I complete the task ahead that has been given to me as my life’s goal.  You see, everyone has a goal.  All of us have been put on this earth to complete a given task, you have and I have.  Yours might be to save a life, or die in pain after a long illness.  Whatever the journey of our life takes, you must all understand that it has already been chosen.  Already written.

Got me so far?  Good.

Anyway, I am ready to go.  I am dressed in black, so I can merge with the shadows.  And, you may have noticed I have put black tape around my glasses, this is so that any light will not reflect of the arms, and the lens is very minimal, as you can see.  They look a bit like headlights that were used during the war. 

That’s where I got the idea.  Good, eh?

Right, so I have my knife, and gloves.  So I won’t leave fingerprints.

Oh, I have also made sure my shoes have no tread, the same reason.  How smart am I?

Okay, pray she feels little pain.  I will do it quick and then show you my trophy.”

“Shit!  Woo!  I did it!

What an unbelievable feeling, I’ve been home about forty-five minutes and cannot believe the blood rush of doing the deed.

No emotion, no guilt.  I am a genius.”

As Jack sits in front of the video camera, there is a knock at the door.  Jack goes to answer the door, leaving the video camera on.  

“Mr Bater?”

“Yes?”

“We would like to ask you a few questions, if that’s okay?”

“What about?”

“A man fitting your description was seen stealing underwear from houses on Escort Street.  Oh yes, and one more thing…..

………you dropped your library card in the garden.”

Is it the place that was promised so long ago?

Was it these days that was dreamt of in the old days?

Did they ever tell us that each day wouldn’t be summer?

Did we always presume that our life would be different?

Is this we, me or is it you?

The early morning songbirds driving us deaf

A next door neighbours angry smiles

This community-less community sells its tale

Close the door and turn to face the wall

Is this today, tomorrow or maybe yesterday?

Can we walk in innocence and enjoy this view?

Do we follow the crowd and jump to a free applause?

Who decides today or can we follow our own piper?

Did we write these words just not so long ago?

Is this the guilt inside everyone?

Do we love the summertime or is it a little to hot?

The most wonderful of moaning heard today

Purgatory times are our autobiographies

Please I’m losing some thought, give me time

Who is lost – is it me or would that be you?

Can anyone of you remember your dreams of long ago?

The childhood adventures we knew could exist

I wonder did any of you live up a dream?

Or is it to be found still hidden from the world?

 Why not just take a break and remember?
